Letter from Mike Moyer, Friends of Herring Run

Dear Sandy,

You had mentioned to me that you have had a role in the efforts in recent years in revitalizing the Mount Vernon Place area of Baltimore.  For that reason, I just wanted to take a moment to write to you regarding the following.

Could you please let the other people or organizations responsible individually or in partnership for the wonderful improvements in recent years to the beautiful appearance and cleanliness of the Mt. Vernon Place, know how much one long-time Baltimore City and Mount Vernon Place fan and resident (me) appreciates those efforts.  Thank you in advance for doing so.

Next year marks my 30th continuous year as a proud resident of Baltimore City, and Mount Vernon Place remains one of my favorite places of all in Baltimore City.  It is a place where I walk or drive through regularly.  Mount Vernon Place in my view is one of the city’s true jewels in terms of magnificent architecture, comforting gardens, sculpture, fountains and walkways space for a city person to take a respite once in awhile, historic grandeur, urbane sophistication, and as a mark of city liveability.

I cannot realistically say that Mount Vernon Place is an inordinately big reason I love this city so much and stick around it with dedication.  Yet I can honestly say that knowing that Mount Vernon Place is there, experiencing that at least weekly on foot or as I drive through Mount Vernon Place—and now knowing and experiencing weekly that Mount Vernon has yet again become spiffed up and beautiful in showing its elegance, tradition, and beauty—sure does make me feel very good on a regular basis that I choose to live and work in Baltimore City.

I had become saddened a number of years ago when I noticed how in the Mount Vernon Place area that trash had really built up, plant and flower beds seemed to be lacking the TLC they formerly had received, dirt and grime seemed to be everywhere there, and a generally run-down appearance seemed to predominate.

Then in recent years as I have walked through or driven through the Mount Vernon Place area, I have definitely noticed a big positive change.  Things seemed generally spruced up, clean, pretty once more, bright and cheerful.

What a very nice thing, and how it affects a positive attitude about living in our great city to see one of its jewels well-tended and aesthetically so pleasing again.  Little things make such a big difference, and clearly some motivated people and groups have gotten together to make the right things happen in Mount Vernon Place.  Thank you so much.
