About the Friends
Our Mission:
The Friends of Mount Vernon Place is a volunteer, membership organization dedicated to the conservation and revitalization of the Mount Vernon Place parks to make them more civil public spaces. Our purpose is to enable residents and visitors to enjoy the wealth of natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural resources on Mount Vernon Place in Baltimore, Maryland.
FRIENDS OF MOUNT VERNON PLACE is the membership group that focuses specifically on the parks. Neighborhood residents and representatives from the cultural institutions, organizations and businesses joined together in 1999 to launch this organization as part of the Midtown plan.
This resulted in a commissioned study of Mount Vernon Place by the Project for Public Spaces. When the Study was completed in 2002 it emphasized many positive assets of the parks but also listed several issues that needed to be addressed for this historic site to reach its full potential. One of these key recommendations pertained to the need to manage the parks more effectively and based on their experience the best way was through the formation of a Conservancy. We are glad to report this recommendation has now been achieved and we look forward to working with the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy to assist them in meeting this important goal.
In conjunction with the Conservancy the Friends will continue to:
- Advocate for the parks
- Build coalitions with organizations, businesses, institutions and city agencies
- Raise funds to enhance maintenance of the parks
- Encourage appropriate accessibility and use of the parks
