Mount Vernon Place is a national landmark and one of the most beautiful earthen spots in America. America's first landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted believed that parks and beautiful urban landscapes were essential ingredients for a truly healthy and democratic society. He created some of the most spectacular and well-loved public places in the United States including Central Park in New York City and the Capital grounds in Washington, D C. Olmsted's design for Mt. Vernon -four elegant European-style parks- was based on the London residential squares of the Georgian period.
